Access to treatment for opioid addiction is about to get easier as the government promises changes to drug laws that will do away with some of the obstacles preventing doctors from offering prescription heroin and methadone.

The idea is a political crowd-pleaser with a catchy slogan: giving desperately ill patients the "right to try'' experimental medicines.
