Meet . . . Jaris Swidrovich, founder and chair of the Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada

Describe your place in the world of pharmacy. I think my place in the world of pharmacy is to be a disruptor. We cannot and will not realize the necessary changes in our profession without disrupting the status quo. The profession of pharmacy, and healthcare in general, is complicit in (re)creating various forms of racism and oppression. As a Two Spirit, Saulteaux and Ukrainian, disabled and queer pharmacist, my place is to speak up, provide education, and uplift the voices and stories of peoples who experience racism, discrimination and oppression; both within our profession and also for folks who access our services. What is your personal “mission statement”? Be a good ancestor. What motivates you? Making a difference motivates me. Whether in my personal or professional life, I am energized by being a small part of contributing to a world where everyone belongs and is celebrated. How do you define success for yourself? Being healthy and happy! What’s the best part of what you do in your career? Education! I am delighted to have a career that is centered around education. Not only do I assist in the education and learning of others, but I too have the ability to constantly learn– from students, colleagues, communities, and more. What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not working? Watch RuPaul’s Drag Race! I am mesmerized by the many incredible talents showcased by each and every drag queen. I love how this show uplifts and celebrates trans and queer folks in ways that communicate to viewers that we all belong. Favourite food? Tacos. No competition! So far, I have not found any tacos better than Dylan and Cam’s tacos, which are available at Shelter Brewing Company on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon. Any pets? I am the very proud parent of a three-year-old golden retriever, Leonard. He brings me such profound joy and was truly a form of therapy for everyone in my family as we struggled through my mother’s journey with cancer. What’s your secret to good mental and physical health? Although I am nowhere near perfect in these areas, I find that staying true to who I am and always remembering where I come from leaves me feeling grounded and well. Additionally, having a supportive social circle and social life keeps me connected to the many different communities I am part of, which also serves as a constant reminder that my mental and physical health are not independent of my surroundings. Briefly—where do you live? I now live on Treaty 13 territory, which is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Anishinaabe, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee and Wendat Peoples, also known as Tkaronto (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). As a member of Yellow Quill First Nation, which is on Treaty 4 territory.
