Dr. Holly Hamilton is “a born-and-raised country mouse who went to the big city (Winnipeg) and graduated from the faculty of medicine (University of Manitoba, 2008) and went into family practice. I married the love of my life and so far we have two children. We became a family of country mice and returned to the rural setting (in Notre Dame, Man.), where we spend time on our 80 acres, along with our llamas, goats, chickens, dogs, cats horses and bees.”

Between May and October, any visit to Halifax has to include the Public Gardens. They are right next to the medical school and major teaching hospitals, so physicians who are here for work should find it easy to drop by for a quick visit. The Gardens are closed in the winter, unfortunately.

Standing in her kitchen one chilly February morning three years ago, Dr. Bobbi French found herself at a crossroads. Dr. French, an adolescent psychiatrist, was the chief of inpatient services at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. She had just wound up an intense project involving a complete overhaul of a troubled unit. The work had been part of a year-long contract, and she now had to decide whether to sign on for another year.“I was obviously having some kind of mid-life mayhem, and I think it was just the fact that I wasn’t getting any younger. And I thought, ‘If I don’t do this now, I’ll sign another contract and I will never ever think to do it again. I’ll never have the courage to do it again.’ ”
