Poliomyelitis (polio) is a devastating disease that historically has caused paralysis and death around the world. It is caused by polioviruses, small RNA viruses that can damage cells in the nervous system.

Dr. Fahad Razak, scientific director of the group, says the highly infectious BA.5 variant also appears to be more immune evasive, meaning people who were recently infected can catch the virus again soon after.

Previous infections protect against other variants but not Omicron, while vaccination does offer protection.

The U.K. Health Security Agency said it believes the virus was "vaccine-derived,'' meaning it came from someone who received the live polio vaccine abroad.
