How I did it: Diving into diabetes

What I doI am a full-time diabetes consultant working in an endocrinologist’s office and several family physicians’ offices. I see adult patients with type 2 diabetes—some recently diagnosed and others with complex medical conditions. A typical office visit would include taking a patient’s weight and blood pressure, reviewing current medications and blood work, reviewing blood sugar readings, time in target, low glucose events, daily glucose patterns, foot and injection site checks. I start (or discontinue) medications, train patients on injectables, dose injectables, set glucose targets, discuss lifestyle, and update patients based on cardiorenal guidelines. I have been called a nurse and a physician by many of my patients, and I always respond that I am proud to be a pharmacist.Why I did itI have found that people living with diabetes each have their own unique story. I find the stories and the treatment of diabetes compelling. It is inspiring to see patients conquer their diabetes challenges.As a consultant, I can set my own schedule, choose my workplaces, and work both independently and as part of a team all at once. I can also book time off whenever needed, which is important to me.Job satisfaction has always been meaningful to me. This doesn’t mean that you won’t have some bad days. Working as part of a team that supports each other can be an amazing experience and these types of jobs do exist.How I did itI was hired as the first pharmacist in a family health team where I had expressed my interest in diabetes care to the family physicians. This led to referrals starting insulin treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes. I attended continuing education events to update myself on diabetes care, and networked with professionals already working in the diabetes world. I decided to take the exam to qualify as a certified diabetes educator (CDE) as I had enough clinical practice hours to be eligible for the exam. Becoming a CDE has opened doors of opportunities for me. My first consulting job was offered to me through my connections with pharmaceutical representatives. Reputation and word of mouth are critical, and I have never had to advertise or apply for any clinical role.How you can startNever be afraid of change. If you are feeling “stuck” in your job, unhappy to be at work, not feeling respected, and your stress level is spiraling, it is past time for a change. Two of my personal red flags were crying in the parking lot before starting my shift, and wearing my clothes inside out and not noticing (OK, that was during Covid).Educate yourself in whatever field of pharmacy that you are interested in. Obtain a specialty certificate if available. Network with people doing the work that you want to become part of. I enjoy giving presentations to allied health professionals about any topic regarding diabetes. Speeches are a great way to become part of a professional network and connect with clinical placements.I hope that you find your own path. It’s important to follow your passion. Pursue your own professional choices that bring you satisfaction. I am pleased to say I am no longer tearful before starting work, and my clothes are now worn right side out!
