Diabetic neuropathy is among the most common long-term complications of diabetes and distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSPN) is the most common subtype. Approximately 40% to 50% of people with diabetes are estimated to develop neuropathy over time, and many individuals may have no obvious symptoms in the early stages. Plus, DSPN increases the risk of foot ulceration, infection and amputation, whereas neuropathy can affect the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems. Find out how pharmacists can support patients in early recognition, education, treatment optimization and complication prevention.
