Many people still can’t get past the notion that pharmacists spend their workdays dispensing medication—“a stock boy with pills,” as Jerry Seinfeld describes the profession. So would it be such a big deal not to have pharmacists? Would other healthcare professionals have the capabilities and willingness to take over the role?

Prescribers and dispensers of narcotics and controlled substance medications in Ontario are now required to follow new rules under Ontario’s Narcotics Safety and Awareness (NSA) Act, which kicked in November 1. But, like many of the initiatives launched by the province, the initial implementation has been marred by confusion, frustration and lots of questions.
