With the opioid crisis leading to a rising number of babies suffering withdrawal symptoms from exposure to the drugs while in the womb, the Canadian Paediatric Society is issuing recommendations to doctors and hospitals on how to better care for these vulnerable newborns and their mothers.

According to Minister of Health, Adrian Dix, the benefits of providing the daily oral antiretroviral medication far outweigh the cost. “Making this medication free for people will prevent new HIV infections, remove barriers to care and services, and help people live longer and healthier lives,” he said.
