The Government of Quebec and the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA) have reached a five-year agreement that will save the province $1.5 billion in healthcare costs and ensure the government does not tender for generic prescriptions.

Pharmacy chain Jean Coutu says the resumption of talks last week between generic drug makers and the Quebec government is a good sign that a deal can be reached without the province resorting to tendering in order to get cheaper generic drugs.

Starting July 1, the Quebec government will issue calls for tender to supply pharmacies with certain generic drugs.
