Although change can sometimes feel unsettling, it is an inevitable aspect of our development. As a pharmacist and pharmacy owner, I believe it is time to change from the narrative of resistance to one of excitement, from fear to one of hope. Pharmacy: a profession on the riseTraditionally, pharmacists were seen primarily as dispensers of medication. Although this role has always been important, the physical scope of the modern pharmacist is much larger and more impactful. This evolution is the byproduct of the ever-increasing complexity of the field of medicine and the need for patient-centered service. Rather than making the pharmacist's role less significant, this change is actually enabling pharmacists to take on new duties in which they can be more specialized and impactful. By embracing a collaborative spirit in which technicians are encouraged to use their full scope of practice, a pharmacy’s staff becomes more cohesive, efficient and better prepared to serve patient needs.The expanding scope of pharmacistsThe changing healthcare environment has opened new frontiers for pharmacists in exciting areas, including: Chronic disease management. Pharmacists are playing an important role in management of diabetes, hypertension and asthma, ensuring comprehensive care. Complex pharmacy solutions.
