Dr. French, an adolescent psychiatrist, was the chief of inpatient services at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. She had just wound up an intense project involving a complete overhaul of a troubled unit. The work had been part of a year-long contract, and she now had to decide whether to sign on for another year.“I was obviously having some kind of mid-life mayhem, and I think it was just the fact that I wasn’t getting any younger. And I thought, ‘If I don’t do this now, I’ll sign another contract and I will never ever think to do it again. I’ll never have the courage to do it again.’ ”
