Do you treat your children like patients?
Have your children ever suggested they don’t get enough attention from you when they are sick or hurt compared with their friends whose parents are not doctors? I have heard this comment, and so have several of my colleagues. - 8/15/2012
The evolution of a patient encounter: from aggression to awareness
We all have patients who want referral to a specialist for everything. I remember once a new patient on his first visit wanted to be referred to a dermatologist, an allergist and a cardiologist without even giving me much of a history. Of course I told him I don’t work like that and he would be better off finding another physician. About two weeks later I got a letter from the college of physicians wanting to know why I hadn’t referred the patient to the specialists. - 7/29/2012
When policy doesn’t make sense, listen to your heart
I provide palliative care to patents for which life-prolonging medical treatment is no longer an option. Recently I came across a situation, which I had faced before, and I went along with the policy that is supposed to guide us. This time it triggered within me something that just didn’t feel right.
