And the winners are . . .

We know that diamonds are created under pressure; so, apparently are many of the gems of the pharmacy profession.If life was fair, 2023 should have been a catch-your-breath-and-regroup-after-a-Global pandemic-year. Instead, a majority of Canadian pharmacists experienced the rapid-fire introduction of hugely expanded scopes of practice during a period of staffing shortages and continuing payer pressure on profits. But none of that prevented exceptional pharmacy professionals from finding new ways to provide exceptional, compassionate and necessary patient care.Of those, more than 50 individuals or teams entered or were nominated for a Pharmacy Practice + Business Award in one of our seven award categories. Our judging panel had their work cut out for them in ranking the entries according to three criteria: innovation, contribution to patient care and impact.There were some surprises: in the technician category, which ended in a tie, even our tie-breaking judge could not choose one winner, so the tie held; and the pharmacy that ranked highest in practice innovation also earned the highest scores in business innovation.Each winner’s story is inspiring in its own way. But there are common threads that carry through each story, as you’ll soon see. The theme that quickly came apparent to me as I learned their stories is that each winner has the vision to see a systemic problem or patient care gap and the commitment to follow though with the hard work to solve it.We hope you’ll be inspired by—and take the time to congratulate—this year’s award winners.
