Pharmacy showdown: Jeopardy-style challenge to test your OTC knowledge across a multitude of categories
How well do you know the use of over-the-counter medications in your pharmacy. This highly interactive session will pit 3 pharmacists against each other in a pharmacy jeopardy-like game. Each audience member will be challenged to see if they have the answers to these practical questions. Also the audience and friends may be asked by the participants to jump in and help with one of the challenging questions. This new and exciting and format should be a fun start pharmacyU Vancouver.
Empowering pharmacists: Leading the charge in non-opioid pain management
Acute and chronic pain are some of the most common patient consultations provided by pharmacists. The spectrum of pain presenting in your pharmacy can range from a child through an older adult with multiple medications and comorbidities. Choosing a specific treatment for the management of pain can be challenging as each is associated with benefits and potential risks. As opioid use continues to be associated with severe opioid-related toxicities, both pharmacists and patients are looking for options that can reduce pain without the risk seen with opioids. This session is designed to provide pharmacists with some practical questions to ask to patients presenting with pain, determining if it warrants referral and discussing the different non-pharmacological and pharmacological options to manage pain.
Jackie & Jill – While caring for patients with rheumatic conditions
Specialty pharmacy practice is continuing to grow and evolve. An increasing number of patients seen in practice take medications such as biologics and oral agents such as JAK inhibitors (e.g., tofacitinib, upadacitinib) to manage conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Pharmacists are crucial in helping patients taking these medications reach their outcomes. In this session pharmacists will review common cases and questions asked by specialty patients and given quick and efficient answers that can help counsel patients using this class of medications.
Destinations & vaccinations: Your patients’ guide to a safe trip
As we start to return to pre-COVID travel, an increasing number of patients are appearing in pharmacy practice asking questions about which travel vaccines they should receive prior to their trip. In the second travel presentation at pharmacyU, this interactive presentation format will focus strictly on the travel vaccines and questions you may see regularly in practice. The goal is to provide pharmacists with the quick tips on common travel-related vaccines (e.g., typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningococcal, yellow fever and rabies). Each of these vaccines will be reviewed in a case format to demonstrate how pharmacists can discuss these vaccine options with the travellers presenting in pharmacy practice.
