British Columbia doctors have chosen a future leader to represent their interests in 2025.Dr. Charlene Lui, a family physician with close to 30 years of experience in community and facility settings, was voted in recently as president-elect of Doctors of B.C.—a position she’ll occupy for one year effective Jan. 1, 2024.On that same date the current president-elect, Dr. Ahmer Karimuddin, is set to become president. Dr. Lui becomes president in 2025.Over the last 27 years Dr. Lui has worked in longitudinal, full-service family practice as well as in obstetrics, long-term and acute care, and in COVID and childhood vaccine clinics, according to an announcement posted on the Doctors of B.C. website. She’s also the board chair of B.C. Family Doctors, an advocacy group for the province’s family physicians.While her practice has focused on family medicine, Dr. Lui has stated her commitment to representing the needs of all physicians.Read: Billing changes for docs rolled out in British Columbia"I commit to addressing the issues of all B.C. doctors, specialists and family physicians alike. I understand the challenges we all face and will advocate for infrastructure that enhances our ability to provide the care our patients need and deserve,” she posted on her website. “I recognize that many of our specialists are feeling undervalued in our under-resourced system. Insufficient access to the OR, infrastructure, and compensation models, unmanageable wait lists, and undue pressure when patients have no family doctor, are just some of the challenges we will tackle together.”Dr Lui has held several other medical leadership roles, including chair of the Burnaby Division of Family Practice, co-chair of the Collaborative Services Committee, and co-chair of the Shared Care Steering Committee. She is the current chair of the Fraser Regional Divisions Collaborative and is co-chair of the Fraser Region Interdivisional Strategic Council.She is also a member of Doctors of BC’s Representative Assembly, WorkSafeBC Negotiations Coordinating Group, and the Community Physician Health and Safety Oversight Group.
