University of Ottawa and Shoppers Drug Mart to launch the first pharmacy care clinic on a Canadian campus

Last Friday, the University of Ottawa announced it is on track to open the first Pharmacy Care Clinic (PCC) on a university campus in Canada by early 2025.The clinic will aim to provide students with improved access to healthcare services while offering pharmacy students opportunities to receive collaborative research and hands-on training experience.“It will help us enhance the primary care we are able to offer our students, train the next generation of healtcare providers and inform improved models of integrated primary healthcare,” said Jacques Frémont, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa.Students will be able to access the clinic for routine vaccinations, chronic disease management and the treatment of common illnesses such as urinary tract infections and pink eye. Students will also be able to book triage appointments for medical conditions that require more complex care.“Better healthcare is possible when academia and industry come together to drive progress in Canada’s health system,” said Frémont. The PCC was made possible through a joint initiative between the University of Ottawa and Shoppers Drug Mart, with the latter investing $2 million into the project. These funds will be allocated towards supporting a collaborative research agreement examining the impact of integrated primary care models on health outcomes and the construction of a new simulation lab a part of the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine.Students enrolled at the University of Ottawa's faculty of health sciences and faculty of medicine will also be eligible to receive clinical placement bursary through the partnership.“This is a core component of our renewed partnership with the University of Ottawa, a partnership that is centred on ensuring sustainability in healthcare, innovation in pharmacy practice and social responsibility; contributing to a healthier society and addressing many health inequities,” said Jeff Leger, president of Shoppers Drug Mart. The PCC is part of the broader Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health initiative. This initiative also includes providing free menstrual products to all University of Ottawa students.The clinic will be located at 801 King Edward Ave. on the University of Ottawa’s main campus. Construction of the PCC is expected to be completed by early next year, with the clinic scheduled to open in February 2025.
