'Ungovernable': Licence stripped from doctor who posted inflammatory statements about COVID

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has permanently revoked the registration of rural practitioner Dr. Mark Trozzi, whose social media posts during the pandemic declared COVID a “deceptive criminal campaign” and called for the hanging or shooting of public health officials and high-profile players such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and Bill Gates.In addition to being stripped of his licence to practise in Ontario, Dr. Trozzi has been ordered to pay $94,960 in investigation and hearing costs.“The Tribunal finds that the member has engaged in professional misconduct,” wrote the Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal—the disciplinary arm of the college—in a summary of the reasons behind its decision. “We are satisfied that the finding of professional misconduct proportionately balances the College’s statutory objectives with the member’s expressive rights.”Further, wrote the tribunal, “we find the member incompetent in his understanding of the principles of informed consent.”Read: 4 docs who won't give CPSO access to records are on shaky legal ground: Health law expertsThe decision to revoke Dr. Trozzi’s certificate was based in large part on the tribunal’s finding that he is unlikely to change and is, therefore, "ungovernable."In imposing the revocation, the tribunal also noted the college was not seeking to prohibit Dr. Trozzi from posting his views on social media but wanted to ensure he “cannot do so while holding the status of a physician.”“Revocation ensures that the registrant cannot use his status as a licensed physician to bolster the credibility of his COVID-19 communications, protecting the public from the harm of misinformation cloaked with the appearance of authority,” wrote the tribunal.The social media posts in question promoted a central idea: that the pandemic was a scam perpetrated by a global conspiracy of special-interest groups and individuals in pursuit of eugenics and genocide. Administering these vaccines on a population-wide scale was akin to genocide, he asserted, with children as the most vulnerable “murder victims.”“In sum, the member promoted non-scientific and baseless conspiracy theories about COVID-19, cast doubt on the motives of public health officials around preventative measures and discouraged adherence with public health interventions,” wrote the tribunal. “A finding that his conduct was disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional would protect the public interest in the context of the pandemic, where misinformation has been shown to cause actual harm to the public. The public is protected when it is not led into thinking that the pandemic is a hoax.
