Treating bacterial prosthetic joint infections: New Canadian statement and free accredited webinar

Three medical associations have teamed up to provide a free accredited webinar on oral antibiotic treatment for prosthetic joint infections.The session will focus on a new joint statement by the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (AMMI Canada) and the Canadian Orthopedic Society (COA) about oral antibiotic treatment. Previously, bacterial bone and joint infections were treated with intravenous antibiotics given through vascular catheter devices. This included prosthetic joint infections. This standard-of-care was based on older evidence and complications from prolonged intravenous antibiotic treatment are significant, the associations stated. Together, they reviewed newer evidence and made the recommendation that oral treatment using highly bioavailable antibiotics can be used in first-line treatment for bone and joint infections, including prosthetic joint infections. The recommendation holds if certain criteria are met, including that the patient has gone through source control procedures (e.g., debridement, drainage) if applicable. The one-hour webinar will take place on March 25 at 8 p.m. (ET). It will be recorded and available at a later date.
