Need vitamins with your prescription meds? Vancouver-based virtual pharmacy and medical services provider Mednow Inc. has launched a service that creates customized patient care plans focused on vitamins and supplements. Provided free of charge and designed by a nutritionist, the plans are built around each patient’s health profile, including any medications they’re currently taking, Mednow CEO Karim Nassar told Pharmacy Practice+Business. For patients who decide to put their plans into action, Mednow will deliver a month’s worth of supplies each month, organized into daily dose packs. “The market today has about 30,000 supplements, vitamins and nutraceuticals—the options are overwhelming for consumers,” said Nassar. “So we had this idea of providing our patients with a guided journey to supplements, from the educated view of a nutritionist as well as of our pharmacists.” Read: Mednow acquires pharmacy business specializing in biologic drugs The service is available virtually through the Mednow website or app. To get started, patients book a chat or call with a Mednow nutritionist. Follow-ups to consult on matters such as drug interactions or dosage adjustments—with a nutritionist or pharmacist—are free as well. Vitamins and supplements sold through the service are largely mid- to high-end brands, said Nassar. “There’s so much product out there and not all of it will undergo the same thoroughness of research and due diligence to ensure quality,” he said. “So we focus on high-quality goods to make sure we’re providing products that are good for our patients.” Read: Canada's changing pharmacy landscape The new service is another step forward in Mednow’s strategy to become a holistic virtual provider of healthcare services, said Nassar. Since it launched its virtual pharmacy services in June 2020, the company has continued to expand its offerings to include a virtual walk-in clinic, mental health support and nutrition counselling. Mednow is also using technologies such as its proprietary robotic system that automatically sorts and packages medications by dosage date and time. “The value for us as a business is, with all these services we can do more to take care of our patients than just dispense medication,” said Nassar. “Adding a service for vitamins and supplements aligns with our goal of creating an inclusive, holistic model of care based on pharmacy.” Read: Robotics and automation give Mednow a competitive edge in digital pharmacy
