Sitting on top of the world: Canadian medical schools score high in international rankings

The Times Higher Education 2024 world university rankings puts the University of Toronto as ninth in the world for clinical and health education, with five other Canadian universities sitting in the top 100. The magazine's ranking highlight universities that excel in medicine, dentistry and other health subjects. The rankings include 1,059 universities around the world that offer clinical and health education. Last year there were fewer on the list, with only 1,001 ranked. McGill University climbed from 29th to 26th place for clinical and health education. The University of British Columbia is 34th, McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. is 36th, the University of Alberta came in at 73rd and l'Université de Montréal is 90th. The University of Toronto ranked 21st overall, with the University of Oxford scoring the top spot overall and also in the clinical and health subject area. McGill University was in the top 50 in seven of 11 subject areas highlighted in the Times Higher Education rankings. These results come as the school is meeting with the Quebec government to try to dampen the impact of government-imposed tuition changes announced on Oct. 13. The changes would mean the university would lose between $42 million to $94 million in revenue annually and need to cut between 650 to 700 jobs, according to a Nov. 2 letter to the university community from Deep Saini, principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University. The tuition for undergraduate medical students from outside Quebec will rise, perhaps even double, under the government’s new plan. The University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine is growing, with a new campus being built in Scarborough, Ont. The Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will train physicians and other healthcare professionals. It’s projected to open in September 2026, according to a Nov. 6 press release from the school. The rankings were released in late October and can be found on the Times High Education website.
