SickKids chooses prime consultant for Patient Support Centre project

TORONTO| The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has selected B+H as the design architect and prime consultant for its new Patient Support Centre (PSC), the first phase of the hospital’s campus redevelopment plan known as Project Horizon.SickKids describes construction of the PSC as “an important first step in building the hospital of the future.”Based in Toronto, B+H is an architecture, interior design and urban planning firm with offices in North America, Asia and the Middle East.The PSC will be designed as a state-of-the-art workplace for hospital staff, housing education, simulation and core administrative services in a modern, technology-enabled and sustainable building.The new tower is expected to be approximately 22 storeys tall and will target a minimum of LEED Gold Certification.When it’s completed, staff will be moved out of the oldest parts of the campus, freeing up space and allowing for the demolition of aging buildings so new facilities for clinical care can be built.“To continue to deliver the high-quality, specialized care that SickKids is known for, our administrative functions that support the hospital also need to be at their best,” said Peter Goldthorpe, vice-president of transformation at SickKids.“By working with B+H, SickKids will pioneer the creation of a forward-thinking, efficient and sustainable building where bold, innovative spaces enable staff to excel at their work,” Goldthorpe added.“This building will set a new precedent in workplace design to support integrated healthcare delivery,” said Patrick Fejér, project lead and senior principal at B+H.“As one of the most highly regarded pediatric healthcare institutions in the world, SickKids requires a first-of-kind facility that embodies the institution's commitment to excellence in care, research and education.
