‘PAD Your ICU’ initiative aims to reduce delirium in the critically ill

EDMONTON | ICU improvement teams are being invited to join a national initiative to reduce pain, agitation and delirium (PAD) in critically ill patients.February 12 is the deadline to enroll in “PAD Your ICU,” a 10-month program running from February to December 2016. It’s designed, delivered and hosted by the faculty of the Canadian ICU Collaborative and supported by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, which is based in Edmonton.The Canadian ICU Collaborative is a national group of interdisciplinary critical care and improvement professionals focused on improving patient care and safety for critically ill patients.The aim of “PAD Your ICU” is to help participating ICU improvement teams reduce PAD in critically ill patients by March 2017 through early and appropriate prevention, assessment and treatment, and to work on one or more of these goals:Increase the use of strategies to prevent PADIncrease the use of clinically appropriate PAD assessment tools with all patients, at appropriate times to 100%Appropriately treat the symptoms of PADImprove the culture, communication and teamwork in the ICU in preventing, assessing and treating PADInvolve families and caregivers in the process of preventing, assessing and treating PADParticipating teams will chose one or two goals to work on for prevention, assessment and treatment of PAD, and will track their performance through to March 2017.To support the teams, five webinars will be held over the course of the program, in March, May and October 2016, and there will also be a series of team calls, list serve, document sharing, monthly reports, assessments, faculty support and data analysis.However, the organizers say, “Although the formal educational sessions provide methodology and framework, many believe the most useful aspect of a collaborative is the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from colleagues from across the country who are facing the same problems.”Participants will also learn novel ways to engage families in the management of patients’ delirium.According to the Canadian ICU Collaborative, delirium is an under-recognized but surprisingly common problem in hospitalized ICU patients, with as many as 80% of critically ill patients from various ICU populations experiencing delirium or subsyndromal delirium.
