All Manitobans 18 years and older can now get a COVID-19 booster shot if they’ve been fully immunized for at least six months. Manitoba made the announcement one day after Health Canada approved the Pfizer vaccine booster for all Canadians 18 and older, and shortly after the province said it was expecting to get a shipment of the one-dose Janssen vaccine, according to a CTV News report. The shipment of 2,250 doses should be arriving in the coming weeks, according to the province, which also recommended a second dose of an mRNA vaccine to those who intend to get the Janssen shot. Manitoba started offering a third dose in September to immunocompromised people and to individuals planning to travel. With the latest announcement, all fully immunized adults who want a booster can get one within the prescribed timeline. Read: Manitoba extends third dose vaccine coverage, sees wide public sector uptake Dr. Joss Reimer, lead of the province’s COVID vaccine implementation task force, said immunocompromised Manitobans or those looking for a third dose for travel could still get their booster shot sooner than six months from their last second dose, but they would need a prescription. Anyone who tries to get an earlier third dose they’re ineligible for will be asked to come back when they’ve hit the six-month mark, said Dr. Reimer. “A longer window between the end of the primary series and the booster dose provides the strongest immune response possible,” she said. "Your immune system needs time to complete its immune response before the next dose.” A news release issued by the province recommended a booster for Manitobans at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19 as well as for their caregivers and people who they come into close contact with. Dr. Reimer also urged a third dose for frontline workers, Indigenous people, seniors over the age of 70, as well as those who are immunocompromised or have certain chronic health conditions.
