‘Oh my god, we did it!’: Doctor wins ‘Amazing Race Canada’ alongside twin sister

Another doctor has just won “The Amazing Race Canada” alongside her twin sister.Dr. Elizabeth Liao, a family physician and obstetrician at the Waterdown Family Medical Clinic in Hamilton, Ont., and Christina Liao, Toronto-based lawyer, were the first to cross the finish line on the season finale of the show, which aired Tuesday night. “Oh my god, we did it!” Dr. Liao screamed upon crossing the finish line.Throughout the 10 episodes, the twins travelled through seven provinces, completing various mental and physical challenges along the way. On the season finale, which took place in Calgary, the twins had a tough time getting past the first challenge and started off the day in last place. But they quickly caught up on the other challenges, narrowly snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat. “To be the first sisters to win, the first Asian Canadians to win, it’s so overwhelming. We can’t even believe it,” they told host Jon Montgomery.Dr. Liao is also the second practicing doctor to win the competition. In season 7, Dr. James Makokis and his husband took home the grand prize. Dr. Sam Lambert also came in first place with his partner in season 5, although he was a medical student at the time. In the inaugural season, married Montreal pediatricians Drs. Holly Agostino and Brett Burstein came in fifth place.Prior to starting the show, they had studied every single challenge that was featured in the previous 11 seasons and mapped them out in a massive spreadsheet. “I'm a doctor, my sister's a lawyer. We've both done many, many years of school. We're very familiar with studying and preparing academically as much as we can,” Dr. Liao told the Medical Post in July, after the first episode had aired. “We have notes on all the challenges, so we used that to study for a long time before we went onto the race.”As part of the grand prize, the Liaos have won $250,000 in cash and a trip around the world. So, what’s next for the twins?“We’re both going to get married this summer. We’re going to have kids, hopefully soon. And in 20 years . . . you’ll see them here, ‘Amazing Race Canada’ season 32!” they said on the show. “They’re going to be the first cousins to win ‘The Amazing Race Canada.’”
