New and free: Training on culturally sensitive care for Francophones

Primary care doctors and other health providers in this space now have free access to online training designed to help them provide culturally sensitive care to Francophone patients. The new module, available on activeoffertraining.ca, will also be mandatory for all new students at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. “NOSM University is expanding its efforts to support Francophone medical students who will practise in French, as well as support Francophile and Anglophone medical students in recognising and providing linguistic and culturally sensitive care,” said Dr. Sarita Verma, NOSM president, vice chancellor, dean and CEO. “By raising awareness about the importance of active offer and providing all learners with the necessary tools, we are fostering a future generation of care providers who are equipped to meet the needs of Francophone patients.” Read: NOSM creating database to identify unique health characteristics in Northern Ontario Active offer refers to an open invitation from service provider to service consumer to communicate in either English or French. The training module is the result of a collaboration between NOSM and the Réseau du mieux-être francophone du Nord de l'Ontario, a social services organization that supports Francophones in Northern Ontario. “The primary goal of this training module is to empower health-care professionals with the necessary skills and strategies to ensure the active offer of French language health services,” said Diane Quintas, executive director of the Réseau. “The goal of implementing these best practices is to bridge the language barrier and ensure equitable access to health care for Francophones.” Dr. Mélanie Patrie, a NOSM graduate and family physician who works with Francophones in minority communities sad the training provides “good insight into the reality of Francophones living in minority situations and the importance of active offer.
