Many Canadians uncomfortable with private healthcare: poll

Healthcare is a hot topic leading into the September 20 federal election, and more than half of Canadians say they somewhat not or not comfortable with having more private healthcare options. The Nanos Research poll found 30% of Canadians are “not comfortable” with having more private healthcare options and 23% are “somewhat not comfortable." In contrast, 30% said they were comfortable with greater privatized healthcare and 14% were somewhat comfortable. Prairie residents are more likely to be comfortable with increased private healthcare options compared to other provinces, at 48%, while those who said they would be uncomfortable were mostly found in Ontario (57%) and Quebec (55%). Almost 50% of respondents also said that having more private healthcare options would make the country's healthcare system weaker, while 34% stated it would make the system stronger. Nanos conducted a hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,029 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, between August 28 and 30 as part of an omnibus survey. The poll found that men are more likely to be comfortable with increased private healthcare services (37%) and to say privatized healthcare options would make the system stronger (40%), compared to women at 24% and 28% respectively. The Conservatives’ election platform states they will “partner with the private sector rather than over-rely on government. We know that there are some things best done by the private sector and will be faster to reach out for help.” The results of the poll were statistically checked and weighted by age and gender using the latest Census information. The sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada. The margin of error for this survey is ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
