Man posed as doctor and disfigured cosmetic clients, suit alleges

The operator of an Alberta cosmetic business is facing a $2.5-million suit over claims that he posed as a doctor and left his clients’ skin damaged and disfigured.The claim states that Sukhdave Seehra “negligently performed cosmetic skin care procedures” and had patients believe that he was a doctor, the Edmonton Journal reports.The suit comes nearly a year after the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons obtained a court order against Seehra that forbade him from using “any terms” that implied he was a medical doctor.Eight former clients filed the suit against Seehra’s Ultra Medic Laser Skin Studio at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Edmonton last week.The clients allege in the suit that treatments left them with serious burns that have left them sensitive to heat and sunlight.Claimant Diane Lee states that she cannot sit outside and that “sunshine through windows can cause her face to break out into reddish sores or hives.”The Better Business Bureau, a consumer advocacy group, gave the Ultra Medic Laser Skin Studio a grade of “F” due to several complaints from customers.“Mr. Seehra offers various cosmetic services at the Ultra Medic Laser Skin Studio in Edmonton, including laser treatments,” the Better Business Bureau states on its website.“The college received complaints from Ultra Medic clients who were dissatisfied with the care provided by Mr. Seehra. These people approached the college because they believed Mr. Seehra was a medical doctor based on statements made to them by Mr. Seehra and/or his clinic staff.”The college said that one patient reported seeing a medical degree on display at the office last year.In a media release last year, the college said that it had no jurisdiction over Seehra, because he is not a physician.However, they sought a court action to prevent him from misrepresenting himself to potential clients.
