Long-time Medical Post medical consultant Dr. Cornelia Baines passes away

Dr. Cornelia “Corrie” Johanna Baines, a renowned epidemiologist, author, and a long-time medical consultant for The Medical Post, has passed away at the age of 89. A professor emerita at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Dr. Baines’s work left a lasting impact on Canadian medicine.She was one of the two lead investigators of the landmark Canadian National Breast Screening Study, a crucial piece of research that shaped the national conversation on breast cancer screening. Dr. Baines also served as a member of the Ontario Task Force for Environmental Health and was a sought-after expert on the health impacts of wind turbines.For many years, she reviewed all of the Medical Post’s clinical articles before they were published. A current staffer says: “It was always good to know Dr. Baines was there for reference and help.”Her obituary notes that she was also a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, an accomplished pianist, and a published novelist. She is survived by her two children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.Meanwhile, Frank Lederer, a former publisher of The Medical Post, has died at the age of 78.Born in the Czech Republic, Lederer immigrated to Canada as a child and rose to become a successful group publisher and president of several magazines, including the Medical Post. Known for his sharp wit, attention to detail, and a remarkable talent for sales, he built an international career at Rogers Communications. He also excelled outside of work, playing third base for the Canadian champion Richmond Hill Dynes Fastball team and as a long-time member of the Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club.According to a tribute from his partner, Jan Kabbani, Lederer was a deeply thoughtful and loving man who adored his family and his Havanese dog, Breckie. His brother, John, and sister-in-law, Gail, remembered him for his charm and his ability to keep everyone “honest and in check.”
