Encounters with birds are under new scrutiny after a B.C. teenager tested positive for bird flu in the first presumptive case of human infection occurring in Canada. The patient is in critical condition.
Dr. Bonnie Henry says the teenager contracted the illness from exposure to an animal or the environment, although there’s a ‘very real possibility’ that the source will never be found.
The provincial government said on the weekend that B.C.’s chief veterinarian and public health teams are still investigating the source of exposure, but that it’s ‘very likely’ an animal or bird.
