How you holding up? National survey aims to capture comprehensive picture of pharmacy's mental health

Three years into the pandemic, virtually everyone knows healthcare professionals are struggling under the demands brought on by COVID-19. Pharmacists have been hit especially hard, with 60% rating their mental health and wellbeing as poor or fair. What isn’t as well known is the extent to which certain factors contribute to the struggles of pharmacists. That’s what a new survey by the Canadian Pharmacists Association hopes to find out. “We are asking Canadian pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to take part in this important survey so we can communicate the realities of frontline experiences to government, key stakeholders and the public and advocate for more pharmacy supports,” Dr. Danielle Paes, chief pharmacist officer at the association, said through a press release. Read: Omicron slaps pharmacists with yet another challenge: replacing sick or isolating staff The national survey, which probes deeply and comprehensively into pharmacists’ mental health and wellbeing, is the first step in the association’s newly launched pharmacy workforce wellness initiative. Results from the survey will help inform solutions and strategies for minimizing COVID’s impact on pharmacy professionals. Respondents to the online survey will be taken through 50 questions designed to gauge the impact of various COVID-related factors that can affect mental health, such as the threat of getting sick with COVID, inadequate staffing, lack of work breaks, relationships with managers and co-workers, and abuse or harassment from the public. Read: CVS, Walgreens close some locations on weekends due to COVID-driven staffing shortages The survey also asks about pharmacy professionals’ ability to take vacations or leaves during COVID, whether or not they’ve considered quitting, and how they think their performance has affected their patients. An entire section focuses on health and wellness resources, with questions that touch on pharmacy workers’ awareness of what resources are available to them, and their level of satisfaction with these resources. The survey drills down to the details of respondents’ work day and week, to assess the number of hours worked per shift and per week, breaks typically taken, and staffing levels. Completing the survey will take approximately 15 minutes, according to the press release. The survey is open now and can be accessed here.
