Despite the 52% response rate and valuable, solution-focused information that our members provided in our consultation survey, the government has now made the decision to slash the fee for pharmacy care plans to $70 and to cap follow-ups at four instead of the current twelve until our agreement expires on March 31, 2025. This is not just a surprise—it’s a direct attack on the quality of care that pharmacists provide as we head into negotiations for a new agreement. These cuts are a blatant contradiction to the concept of refocusing healthcare in Alberta and pose a significant threat to patient health and the overall healthcare system. While anticipated expenditures for this year were based on previous trends, we know that Alberta’s population is growing more than any other province in Canada and that the current strains on our healthcare systems are resulting in more Albertans turning to their most trusted healthcare professional, pharmacists, to help fill this gap. The vital role of pharmacists Pharmacists are essential to our healthcare system, offering services that extend far beyond dispensing medications. Care plans and follow-ups are crucial for managing chronic conditions, ensuring medication adherence, and preventing hospital admissions. The proposed cuts will drastically reduce the quality of care Albertans receive, leading to more frequent visits to doctors or emergency rooms due to poorly managed conditions. This is not just a reduction in pharmacy service funding, it’s a dismantling of a critical component of patient care.
