Gone for good: Doctor's misdeeds include ignoring patient's kidney disease, calling Dr. Fauci a murderer

An Ontario doctor who ignored a patient’s worsening kidney disease and Tweeted disparaging comments about medical experts—including Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom he called a “murderer”—has agreed to leave the profession for good. Dr. Zoltan Peter Rona, a general practitioner in Toronto, has also been ordered to pay $6,000 in college costs. Between January and April 2020, Dr. Rona saw a patient who came in with severe hypertension. Despite bloodwork that showed an evolving kidney disease, Dr. Rona failed to recognize the severity of the patient’s medical problems, according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s discipline tribunal. “Thereafter, Dr. Rona followed (the patient) on a monthly basis, when immediate management with follow-up within hours or days would have been more appropriate” wrote the tribunal in its summary of Dr. Rona’s undertaking with the college. When the patient declined medication in February 2020, Dr. Rona did not refer him to a specialist but rather recommended “costly and unproven diagnostic tests” and suggested supplements. One of these supplements was nattokinase. Read: Doctor who used unproven cancer treatments stripped of licence and hit with almost $200,000 in costs The patient subsequently started having chronic nosebleeds—the primary and most serious potential side effect of nattokinase, according to the undertaking summary. “Dr. Rona did not connect the potential effect of the supplement or modify his treatment,” wrote the tribunal. The patient’s health deteriorated further and he was ultimately admitted to a hospital due to a hypertensive emergency and kidney failure which required dialysis. Dr. Rona admitted to the college in December 2021 that he was accountable for permitting he patient to continue with the alternative medical approach, and that he should have insisted that the patient go immediately to emergency. In addition to the complaint filed by the patient, the tribunal also looked at Dr. Rona’s activity on social media. An analysis of 351 Tweets found that Dr. Rona had on many occasions minimized the seriousness of COVID-19 and suggested COVID vaccines did more harm than good. According to the tribunal, Dr. Rona’s Tweets suggested the public was being “scammed by medical experts and public officials.” Some of Dr. Rona’s Tweets were anti-Asian, including some that disparaged Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam. He also called U.S. Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Fauci a “murderer” and a “liar,” according to the tribunal. Dr. Rona has agreed to resign and never apply to practice medicine in Ontario or any other jurisdiction.
