FIP calls for pharmacists’ role in supporting self-care to be recognized

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has released a new policy statement calling for greater recognition of pharmacists' role in self-care and "empowering people to manage their own health more effectively." This statement is an update on the FIP's 2017 policy on the topic. According to a press release from the FIP, the policy statement calls on governments, healthcare systems and pharmacy organizations to recognize, support and invest in the role that pharmacists play in helping patients take charge of their own health. “Self-care is the foundation of healthier lives and societies, but people need support to do it well. Pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals worldwide—trusted, knowledgeable and part of their communities,” said Luís Lourenço, FIP professional secretary and chair of the policy committee in that same press release. “This policy reinforces pharmacists’ responsibility to inform, guide and support individuals in caring for themselves safely and effectively.” When properly supported, self-care can prevent diseases, long-term conditions, reduce hospital and doctor visits and lower overall healthcare costs, the FIP say. Because of pharmacists' accessibility and health expertise, they are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between public health programming and the personal choices people make about their health—like providing over-the-counter medicine advice, point of care testing and supporting healthy habits. The FIP's updated policy includes recommendations to governments, insurers, pharmacy organizations and educators to strength pharmacist-led self-care services. Namely, they recommend paying pharmacists fairly for this work, investing in community pharmacies, increasing access to reliable health information and supporting pharmacists. “Pharmacists empower people to look after their health, but they can’t do it alone. Governments, insurers and the pharmaceutical industry must work together to ensure equitable access to self-care support and safe products—and that pharmacists are fully integrated into health systems to deliver these services,” Lourenço added.
