Family doctor and ‘Amazing Race Canada’ superfan competes in latest season of the show with twin sister

An Ontario physician is teaming up with her twin sister to compete in the adventure of a lifetime as contestants in the latest season of “The Amazing Race Canada.”Dr. Elizabeth Liao, a family physician and obstetrician at the Waterdown Family Medical Clinic in Hamilton, Ont., and Christina Liao, a lawyer in Toronto, are competing as “Tina and Liz” in the 12th season of the show. Together, they’ll be navigating across Canada to compete in physical and mental challenges, with dreams of reaching the $250,000 grand prize.“The whole experience for my sister and I was really just truly a dream come true. We had always prided ourselves in being very well-rounded, not only with our careers but with our hobbies and other activities, too.” Dr. Liao told the Medical Post in an interview. “To be able to do the race together and just spend so much time together, it was honestly more fun than anything, and we're just so lucky we had the opportunity to do that.”The season premiere aired on July 7, with the first challenges kicking off in Whistler, B.C. Thanks to their background as competitive figure skaters, the sisters were able to breeze through the dancing challenge and get an early lead, ending the day with a first-place finish.Dr. Liao says she and her sister have been "Amazing Race" fans since they were children, calling it a “lifetime dream” to one day compete. To prepare for the challenges on the show, the twins did their homework, meticulously creating a massive spreadsheet of every single challenge and location that was featured in all of the previous 11 seasons.“I'm a doctor, my sister's a lawyer. We've both done many, many years of school. We're very familiar with studying and preparing academically as much, as much as we can,” said Dr. Liao. “We have notes on all the challenges, so we used that to study for a long time before we went onto the race.”Doctors have had a strong track record previous season of “The Amazing Race Canada.” In the inaugural season, married Montreal pediatricians Drs. Holly Agostino and Brett Burstein placed fifth. In season 5, Dr. Sam Lambert, who was a medical student at the time, took home the grand prize with his partner, and in season 7, Dr. James Makokis and his husband also won the competition.“In medicine, you have to know how to think on your feet,” said Dr. Liao, when asked about what advantages her medical background brought to the competition. “That was really helpful on the race to be adaptable and to be able apply things in different ways.“The procedural skills actually ended up helping quite a bit, too. There are a lot of little fine motor activities we had to do, so my kind of surgical background definitely helped a bit with that on the race.”“The Amazing Race Canada” airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV, with episodes available to stream on Crave the next day.
