Ex-Infoway CEO Michael Green sues non-profit for wrongful dismissal

The former CEO of Canada Health Infoway is suing the non-profit for wrongful dismissal, according to reporting from the Globe and Mail.According to the termination letter reviewed by the newspaper (and also posted publicly by Conservative MP Dan Mazier), Infoway had offered Michael Green’s a year’s worth of base salary of $616,700, in addition to his bonuses, benefits and car allowance as part of his severance package.But the Globe reported that Green is seeking more than $3 million in damages against Infoway.According to the Globe, Green is claiming $1.9 million for wrongful dismissal, another $1 million for aggravated or moral damages, in addition to money to attend to legal costs and other relief. Green’s claim, filed on July 30, alleges he should have gotten the equivalent of 24-months’ notice given than he is 71, had a high level of compensation and was subject to “negative public circumstances and stigma” around his dismissal. The firing of Green, which took place at the end of April, came after the shutdown of the e-prescribing tool PrescribeIT, despite the fact that the federal government had put $300 million in tax dollars towards the program.That cancellation sparked an investigation from the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, which prompted Infoway to disclose that it had spent nearly $900,000 on Green’s annual salary and $147,000 on his travel expenses, while racking up more than $418,000 in executive travel and $23 million in consulting fees. Infoway filed a notice to defend the suit on Aug. 12 and declined to comment in the Globe story, as did the office of federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel.Meanwhile, Mazier, who is also the Conservative health critic, called for Infoway to be completely defunded “before more money is wasted” after the severance package came to light.“Canada Health Infoway has become an unaccountable organization where insiders get rich while taxpayers are left paying the bill,” he wrote on social media.
