Dr. Joshua Tepper leaves Health Quality Ontario to lead North York General Hospital

Dr. Joshua TepperToronto - Dr. Joshua Tepper, a family physician with a varied career in health leadership, has been appointed president and CEO of North York General Hospital (NYGH), one of Ontario’s leading community academic hospitals, effective Nov. 5, 2018.“Dr. Tepper’s appointment is the result of an extensive national search process, which sought an accomplished leader who is passionate about building on NYGH’s record of success as a high-performance organization, and who will nurture our vibrant and distinctive culture,” said Samuel Elfassy, chair of the hospital’s board of governors.Dr. Tepper is currently president and CEO of Health Quality Ontario (HQO), which works in partnership with Ontario’s healthcare system to support a better experience of care, better health outcomes and better value for money.His predecessor as CEO at NYGH, Dr. Tim Rutledge, held the position for seven years before leaving earlier this year to lead Toronto’s newly formed Catholic hospital network, Our Shared Purpose.Prior to joining HQO, Dr. Tepper was the inaugural vice-president of education at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he was responsible for Sunnybrook’s educational strategy and programming for learners, physicians and staff, patients and their families and the community.Previously, he was assistant deputy minister in the Health Human Resources Strategy Division of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, where he led the HealthForceOntario health human resources strategy.Dr. Tepper has also served as the senior medical officer for Health Canada, an adjunct scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), and a research consultant for the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). He has received several provincial and national awards for his leadership in these positions.Meanwhile, he has always remained in active practice serving marginalized populations and taking on clinical leadership roles.Dr. Tepper completed medical school at McMaster University and his residency in family medicine at the University of Toronto. He holds a degree in public policy from Duke University, a Masters of Public Health from Harvard and an executive Masters of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business.Read more about North York General Hospital here.
