Connecting the dots between diabetes and depression: New site focuses on mental health aspect of the disease

Diabetes is considered a physical issue, but it also affects people’s mental health. A new website from Sanofi Canada and Diabetes Care Community is trying to help. According to a survey from Diabetes Care Community, a patient-centred website, almost 60% of respondents felt that their diabetes impacted their emotional well-being at least some of the time. Of those, only 42% thought they had found the proper support and resources to help them manage their mental health. And 70% felt it was important to be able to access online resources to support their emotional well-being and diabetes management. In response, Diabetes Care Community has created a new section of its website in partnership with Sanofi Canada, a biopharmaceutical company. The new site focuses on emotional well-being and includes dozens of articles from diabetes specialists that have tips on how to cope and guidance on how to find more support. Read: Low-carb diets increase risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke “The survey results showed that a vast majority of respondents feel that it is important to have access to online resources to support emotional well-being, so we are pleased to be collaborating with Sanofi Canada to help meet this need,” Shelley Diamond, BScPhm, president and co-founder of Diabetes Care Community, said in a press release. The articles cover a wide range of topics, including anxiety and depression—30% of people with diabetes have depression at one point, the site says. And it delves into diabetes distress, a state where people are overwhelmed by fears of complications, difficulty with physicians, discouraged by keeping up with the regimen, or interpersonal concerns between themselves and family members. And it provides information for caregivers of people living with type 2 diabetes or children with type 1 diabetes. “[Sanofi Canada] is proud to collaborate with DCC to support the creation of new resources to help Canadians optimize their emotional well-being and manage their diabetes so they can live life to the fullest,” Ahmed Moussa, general manager of General Medicines, Sanofi Canada, said.
