Deadline nears for CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses issues 'Call to Nominate' for the annual Joan Lesmond Award

Nominations are now open until August 17, 2012 for the annual CARE Centre Joan Lesmond Internationally Educated Nursse (IEN) of the Year Award.The award was established in 2011, CARE Centre’s 10th anniversary year, to honour the late Dr. Joan Lesmond, a nursing leader who championed access to the nursing profession, and to celebrate CARE Centre’s member nurses for their success in Canada.Dr. Lesmond passed away on August 5, 2011, but she lives on in the annual award, which last year was won by Loy Ahseri. Asheri is a CARE Centre member IEN originally form Tanzania who works as an RN in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital, and is now a part-time CARE Centre case manager as well.CARE Centre is a bridge training program funded by both the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada.“I was so personally thrilled to receive the award in such a great nursing leader’s name, but it’s also important because it shines a light on all the incredible work CARE Centre does on behalf of IENs," said Asheri."I came to Canada as a single mother of four children and became despondent of ever regaining my nursing career. With CARE Centre’s help I now have a job I love in Cardiac Care and I can also mentor fellow IENs with the organization. I now have a daughter in medical school, with the rest of my children pursuing other studies. The Joan Lesmond IEN of the Year Award celebrates immigrant success in Canada.”“CARE Centre nurses have so much to offer the Ontario health care workplace, with its increasing diversity and complexity.” said executive director Zubeida Ramji. “As an internationally educated professional from St. Lucia, Joan Lesmond consistently recognized and promoted how vital IENs are to nursing. She was a true champion of their cause.”To be eligible for the award, the Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) who is being nominated has to be currently registered as a nurse in Ontario (RN or RPN); be working in a nursing practice environment for at least one year; be a member of CARE Centre for IENs. Nominations can be submitted by any of the following groups: Nurse Manager and/or Administrator; Team Leader; Peers (nurses, health care discipline team members, physicians); Patients and families.The main criteria for consideration are: the IEN being nominated consistently demonstrates professionalism and an excellent quality of presence and caring that assists people in the holistic healing process, a fundamental value of nursing practice; the IEN consistently displays exemplary professional knowledge and practice; the IEN consistently promotes an atmosphere of team work.Nomination kits, a downloadable poster and a video backgrounder are available at www.care4nurses.org/ienaward where you can also view a tribute video to Dr. Lesmond.
