Alberta college launches national search for new registrar

The search for a new leader is underway at the Alberta College of Pharmacy as longstanding registar Greg Eberhart prepares to retire at the end of the 2024.Eberhart, who has been in the role since 1990—when the ACP was known as the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association—will work with the president to onboard the registrar-elect, according to an announcement issued recently by the college.“Throughout the fall, responsibilities will increasingly transition to the registrar-elect until Greg’s retirement on December 31, 2024,” wrote the ACP, whose council has appointed a succession planning committee to lead a national search for a new registar, with the goal of announcing a registrar-elect in July 2024.In the ACP announcement, Eberhart said he never envisioned that his reign at the college would last as long as it has.“However, I have been inspired by the continuous opportunity to learn, to affect change, and to pursue an environment where pharmacy professionals truly put individuals in their care first, and consistently take responsibility for the appropriateness and responsible use of their drug therapy,” he said. “I have been fortunate to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people—together, I believe we have made a difference. I take pride in the successes that we have achieved, knowing that in an ever-changing world there remains much more to be accomplished.” Read: Alberta adds more flexibility for internationally educated pharmacist graduatesThe ACP noted that under Eberharts’ leadership, the college has led innovation in pharmacy on a global scale, with advances that included pharmacists’ scope of practice expanding to allow them to prescribe medications and administer injections.“Since then, Greg has led efforts to shift the focus of pharmacy teams beyond assessing prescriptions and dispensing medications to providing person-centred care and becoming trusted and valued members of Albertans’ healthcare teams,” wrote the college.Read: Alberta wants pharmacies to be ruled by college standards, not government regulations
